- The New Flemish Comic Strip
This new generation of authors born to a region renowned for the immense popularity of its family comic strips is inspired by far-away horizons rather than by local material. Despite their artistic diversity, they do share one common ambition, and that is to conquer the world (of comic strip art) by recounting true stories! Their names are, just to mention a few, Brecht Evens, Nix, Pieter de Poortere, Simon Spruyt ou Judith Vanistendael. Their work has been translated into several languages, and they are lauded for their artistic and script-writing quality, both at home and abroad. This fantastic success story comes as a direct result of the Comic Strip Art Commission, which was set up in 2002 as part of the Flemish Foundation for Literature. By awarding art grants as well as providing effective support with translation and international promotion, this commission has contributed to the emergence of a new highly-talented creative generation. These gifted Flemish-speaking Belgian authors most definitely deserve this large-scale exhibition that will soon be opening its doors at the Comics Art Museum…
