Comics Beyond
New paths for European comics artist careers.
Launching the project and the first call : the Training Camp.
The project began in November 2023 and will end in July 2026. It aims to explore different paths for European comic artists to develop their activity at an international level, to fight against their precarious working situation and help them make a living from their artistic activity. Comics Beyond can be described as an experimental European comics incubator.
Comics Beyond will take direct actions to foster the employability of European comics artists, providing the authors with various and different initiatives, resources and activities. The project will start by organizing two calls: the first one to join a week of training for European comics artists in Amadora in July, and the second one to propose and develop transdisciplinary comics projects, helping the selected ones to reach a broader and international diffusion. The project will also organize webinars and conferences about the know-how of doing comics workshops and will design and publish an online database of transdisciplinary comics projects and their authors. Everything will be done with the purpose of helping the European artists community grow and be financially self-sufficient.
The first Open Call: A training week in Amadora !
The training week is aimed at European professional comics artists and is designed to bring 12 artists together in Amadora (Portugal) for a week of workshops and masterclasses on the professional challenges of making comics and being an author, along with reaching different and new paths of career development (with a focus on working with other media and museums). To apply you only need to fill a form and demonstrate that you are a professional and working artist. The call is already open and whoever respects its general conditions can apply.

The partners.
Comics Beyond is supported by the European Commission as part of the Creative Europe - Cultural cooperation projects (small scale) program. Four comics professional structures from different countries are cooperating to make the project a reality: the Comic Art Museum - Brussels (Belgium), Amadora BD (Portugal), Rendez-vous BD Amiens (France) and COMICON Napoli (Italy), in partnership with Escola Joso (Spain), Art Bubble Festival (Denmark) and the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival (United-Kingdom).
Led by the Comic Art Museum - Brussels, Comics Beyond brings together all of these renowned international partners, each one working on different aspects of the project, to make the project’s mission a reality and to develop an European network for comic art.
